Trade Names
Haragiri, Sen-no-ki, Sen – Japan

Indigenous to
East Asia: Japan, mainly Hokkaido; Korea; China, Manchuria to Jangsekiang; In Europe isolate cultured as parktree.
Characteristics
The sapwood and the heartwood are hardly distinguishable. The wood is uniform colored whitely to yellowish brown. In fresh situation the wood has a sharp, unpleasant smell, which gets lost by drying. But by the way it is flavourless. In structure Sen is in terms of color similar to white Ash or very bright smooth-leaved-Elm. Rays emerge as fine mirrors, whereby the wood appears decorative. The texture is medium-rough, but constant, the structure is usually straight grained. The direction of grain is without strong deviations; isolated with light latch-growth or flat wavy.
