Characteristics
The sapwood is pallid yellowish to yellowish brown and only 3 to 4 cm wide. The heartwood is clearly deposited and the color goes from middle brown to magenta brown. This consistent ground coloration is interrupted by dark brown to nearly black zones, which provoke beautiful radial color stripes and tangential distinctive dark flame patterns. The breadth of the slightly rippled dark color rings partly runs parallel to the growth layers. Pores are medium-sized to coarse, light zoning on the borders of the growth layers and perfectly visible on all cutting directions. The rays influence the wood image only as lighter reflections from 2 to 4 mm breadth wise. Direction of grain is without irregular twist; only depends on principal form.
