Substitution
As solid wood for Afzelia by observation of special varieties, Afrormosia, Courbaril, Moabi (Baillonella toxisperma), Utile and Yellow Balau.
Indigenous to
Indonesia (Irian, Kalimantan, Sumatra), Malaysia (Malaysian peninsula, Sabah, Sarawak); Madagascar, Papua New Guinea.
Characteristics
The sapwood is 5 to 8 cm wide and yellowish white. The heartwood is clearly separated, light brown to reddish brown, matt-finished and turns darker from brown to dark reddish brown. Pores are rough, scattered and frequently affected by nearly black, partly also yellow plenums the wood image of all cut directions. Wood rays are fine, only visible as mirrors on radial surfaces. The pores are surrounded and define the growth layers as fine, bright lines; indiscernible on longitudinal cut. The direction of grain mostly is with light irregular twist, generate no regular or only weak distinctive glamour stripes.
