Indigenous to
Europe to Siberia, Turkey, North America, India
Characteristics
The trunk is straight grown and affects burrs. The sapwood and the heartwood are faintly different. The sapwood is white to yellowish white, while the heartwood is light brown to brown. The woods widely corresponds in structure and texture the other European Poplar-species, whereas it must be pointed out that on the mentioned burrs cause a spiry direction of grain. On these positions the wood is very knotty. The quantity and size of the pores hardly change within an annual ring, so that spring- and summerwood are not distinguishable. On longitudinal cuts the pores are visible as fine hair splits. The thin soft distinctive late summerwood zones show up as plain or gently striped, which is generally less decorative. Only grained pieces are very decorative.
