Description
Botanical Name
Ulmus carpinifolia Gled.(Feldrüster), Ulmus glabra Huds. (Bergrüster), Ulmus campestris var. Laevis Spach. (Fam. Ulmaceae)
Trade Names
Feldulme, Feldrüster, Rotulme, Rotrüster, Smooth-leaved elm, Orme champetre, Ormeau, Olmo campestre, Olmo montano, European elm
Substitution
Smooth-leaved Elm is in indoor use an attractive alternative for frequently used decorative woods like European Oak, European Ash, Sen and other, if only to a certain extent as a result of the lower availability. The same family offers east Asian Keyaki (Zelkova spp.) and the South European Hackberry or Hackberry (Celtis spp.) which come from the eastern North America; two timbers similar in image and -properties, which can be assembled in exchange for smooth-leaved Elm very good.
Indigenous to
Europe, North Africa, Asia (southern Siberia, Amurarea); mostly in lowland
Characteristics
The sapwood and the heartwood are sharply separated. The sapwood is narrow to medium-broad and yellowish grey. The heartwood is grey brown to reddish brown, partly also dark brown and turns darker when exposed to air. In transition zone from sapwood to heartwood the formation of color stripes is possible. The annual rings are distinguishable. The pores are fine in summerwood and mostly combine by wavy belts. The rays are good visible as darker mirrors. The wood is very decorative and belongs to the most beautiful European wood species. The structure is long fibre and mostly straight grained, spiral grain occurs, the texture is rough and constant.
