Characteristics

Wood that is accentuated by beautifully constant and numerous healthy knots; populated with epicormic branches (per exemption). The sapwood and the heartwood are sharply separated. The sapwood is narrow and yellowish-white in general. The heartwood is grey-yellow, and turns light to dark brown when exposed to air. Annual rings and growth layers are not clearly prominent. The pores form an uninterrupted cross-zone in spring wood of the annual rings. The rays are broad and clearly visible. The structure is different depending on location and age, usually grown straight or spirally, the texture ranges from fine-grained to rough.
