Indigenous to
eastern United States, beside in ultimate North- and Southeast; main found in Carolina, Georgia and Virginia; in Germany frequently cultivated as park-tree.
Characteristics
The sapwood and the heartwood are well separated. The sapwood is narrow and nearly white, often brighter striped or discolored by sapwood-taints and is not useable. The heartwood varies between light- and dark yellow, greenish or reddish brown and turns rapidly darker when exposed to air. It has no special taste or smell. Annual rings are not visible to the naked eye. The structure is usually straight grained; the texture is medium-fine and constant. Direction of grain is predominantly straight.
