throughout Europe with the exception of Central- and South Spain, in Asia Minor and Southwest Asia and partially in India.
Characteristics
The sapwood and the heartwood are hardly distinguishable. The sapwood is broad and almost white. With increasing ageing of the tree it gets down to a notedly heartwood formation, at which the tree defines to grey, brownish up to olive-colored. The wood has various shades of colors and irregular figuring in usually either flaming or striped patterns making it very decorative. The texture is medium-rough to rough and consistently irregular, while the structure is mostly straight grained.
