The sapwood and the heartwood are strongly separated. The sapwood is nearly white or yellowish, the heartwood offers a very beautiful, violet-brown tinge, which goes to tobacco-colored, nerved with very dark, nearly black veining, which give the wood its typical appealing appearance. The wood is hard, heavy and moderate fat. It is very decorative.
