Characteristics

The sapwood and the heartwood are hardly different, without resin-coloration. The sapwood is narrow, nearly white to yellowish-white, the heartwood is yellow brown to a darker yellowish brown with light tinct of red, its late summer wood varies very little. The Western Hemlock is fine grained, rather light in weight, soft, yet tough and shrinks minimally. It is not weather resistant.
