Description

Botanical Name

Tilia platyphylla Scop. (Sommerlinde) / Tilia cordata Mill. (Winterlinde) (Fam. Tiliaceae)

Trade Names

Sommerlinde (Großblättrige Linde), Winterlinde (Kleinblättrige Linde), Basswood, Lime, Tilleul, Tiglio

Substitution

American Limetree, Basswood, Carolina basswood

Indigenous to

Europe and Belarus

Characteristics

The both wood species are very similar. The sapwood and the heartwood are hardly distinguishable. The sapwood is very broad. The wood is nearly white, with older trees yellowish to light brownish and turns darker under the impact of light and air. It has a matt shine. Annual rings are only slightly visible. While the small leaved European Lime tree is found more in forest stands and in mixed forest, the large-leaved Lime tree grows alone, not in groups. The structure is straight grained, the texture is fine and constant.
