Description

Botanical Name

Larix decidua Mill., Larix europaea communis Laws. (Fam. Pinaceae)

Trade Names

Lärche, Gemeine Lärche, Larice, European larch, Melèze d´Europe

Substitution

Indigenous to

The tree has spread throughout Central Europe, especially in the Alps, the Carpathians and in Poland.

Characteristics

similar in appearance to the European Larch; Antique types of wood such as European Larch and Whitewood obtain by a complex steaming method and cooking process, a similar appearance like traditional matured timber. An advantage of this method is the low cracking of the wood, thereby avoiding much of the natural old age cracks and splits of the wood. A definite distinguishing advantage to this antiquing method is the absence of wormholes and other age-related defects, because one is actually working with fresh wood.
